Request the record from the department that handled it

The City of North Las Vegas Police Department page lists Police Records at 2266 Civic Center Drive and 702-633-1715. Use the department’s current instructions for a report handled by NLVPD. The same page describes its Traffic Division’s collision-investigation role.

Do not choose a records office solely because your address includes “Las Vegas.” Check the responding officer’s agency and incident number. If another department handled the event, ask that department where to request its record.

If a work or delivery vehicle is involved, capture its identity

A logo on a door may be only one part of identifying a commercial vehicle. When it is safe, photograph the license plate, company name, vehicle number and any visible identifying numbers. For a truck with a trailer, distinguish the tractor from the trailer in your notes.

• Keep the driver’s information and the names of any companies shown on paperwork.
• Save trip, delivery or booking details you already have.
• Note cameras or nearby businesses that may help establish the sequence.
• Preserve original files rather than keeping only compressed message copies.

Give a pedestrian or witness account a point of view

For an event at a driveway, crossing or parking entrance, record where each person was and what they could see. A witness who heard an impact may have different information from one who saw the approach. Preserve both accounts without filling the gaps yourself.

If you were walking, note the route, crossing markings, lighting and any obstruction visible from your position. Avoid returning to a dangerous location to recreate it. Summit reviews pedestrian injuries as well as vehicle collisions; the evidence needed depends on the event.

Keep towing and insurance paperwork in the same file

Save the tow company’s name, storage location, receipts and written notices. Keep a dated record of vehicle inspections or changes to its location. If a vehicle may contain useful evidence, raise that issue promptly with counsel; do not assume someone else has already preserved it.
